Chapel FM Community Radio

Groundworks Architects won the commission through competitive interview to provide full architectural service for the conversion of a former Methodist Chapel into a state of the art community radio station and arts center.

The brief called for 3 distinct studio spaces with different functions - voice recording, rehearsal & band recording, and performance space, the latter utilising the acoustics of the main hall. A flexible meeting and work space was created along with all required ancillary store and services. All spaces are fully wheelchair accessible.

Groundworks led a diverse design team including a local glass artist who developed the stained glass to the main facade and performance space and acoustic engineers who advised on shaping the sound of each studio. A new acoustic floor was installed at first floor level into the former central balcony opening to create a “theatre in the round” performance space. The building is well used by school and youth groups from the local community. The project was delivered within budget.

Completed: June 2014
The project won the RICS Pro Yorkshire Community Benefit Award 2015
Total construction cost: £ 500,000
