Environmental Design: Working with specialist environmental consultants we are keen to bring a ‘best practice’ environmental approach to all of our projects. We operate an in-house environmental policy setting a benchmark above and beyond that required by the building regulations. Our policy includes the need for advocacy to clients and contractors in this area. We welcome the opportunity to introduce renewable technologies and sustainable specifications into buildings. We have recently completed Attenborough Nature Reserve Visitors Centre. This project took a holistic approach to environmental design addressing a wide range of environmental concerns and received an RIBA East Midlands Award for Architecture.
Sustainability:Working with community and voluntary sector organisations, we are keenly aware that the costs in use of buildings are as important as their initial capital cost. We strive to achieve durable, low maintenance, environmentally aware buildings with low running costs to ensure the sustainability of projects that we work on.
Community Based Approach: As a community based practice we are keen to get involved at a grass roots level with all of the ‘stakeholders’ in a project. It is our firm belief that involving the users of buildings in the design process leads to better buildings. We are responsive to the needs of client groups, and keen to demystify the process for those who are new to building works procurement.
Since setting up in 1989 we have established a track record of working closely with a wide range of community, voluntary and statutory organisations throughout the Midlands and Yorkshire. Many of the projects are developed from grass roots ideas in collaboration with local community groups and artist and require a feasibility study to establish the needs of the project and its goals. In order to to approach major funders, Groundworks has carried out over 100 such studies and we can help community groups access funds to pay for such studies.
Funding: We have an excellent working knowledge of relevant funding. Projects from Groundworks Architects have attracted funding from all of the major sources: SRB, the National Lottery, Europe (ERDF), National and Local Government, the Charitable Trusts. We are experienced in working within the particular parameters set by individual funders and meeting the challenges of deadlines, ring-fenced funding, multi-agency involvement, accountability and auditing.
Artistic Collaboration: Many of our schemes have involved collaborative working with artists throughout the design process. Artistic interventions have included amongst others:
• Signage and way-marking developed with local school children on the Beaumont Leys Estate, Leicester.
• Flooring designs for The Point Arts Centre, Doncaster
• Metal working sculptures for Kinoulton Village Hall.
• Integrated glass panel and brass plaque artworks for the Courthouse Project, Otley
Accessibility and Diversity: We recognise the need for community led initiatives to be representative of all sectors of the community and through our work address issues such as accessibility, perception, barriers to involvement and the need for dedicated or culturally appropriate space. Groundworks Architects has received an English Heritage Civic Trust Award [Special Award Civic Trust 2000, National awards] for accessible design and is a qualified member of the Centre for Accessible Environments.
